3.44MWh Liquid Cooled DC Battery Container for Utility EPC BESS Integration
3.44MWh DC Battery Container for Utility EPC Integration
For utility battery storage projects, successful equipment selection depends on more than the required energy capacity. The battery-to-PCS interface, control responsibilities, transportation requirements and commissioning documentation all need to be defined before procurement.
The Voltertech BESS-3.44MWH-W is a 3.44MWh liquid-cooled LiFePO4 battery container designed as the DC-side energy storage section of a larger BESS installation. It offers a 1228.8V nominal battery architecture, a specified 1036–1401V DC operating range and LAN/RS485/CAN communication interfaces for supported system integration.

Define the Battery Container Supply Boundary
Before issuing a purchase order, the EPC contractor should separate confirmed battery-container characteristics from equipment and functions that require project-specific approval.

Three Engineering Checks Before Procurement
01 — Verify the DC Operating Window
The battery system operates within a specified 1036–1401V DC voltage range. The selected PCS must be evaluated against the full battery operating window, not only the nominal voltage of 1228.8V. DC protection, isolation requirements and approved connection arrangements should be reviewed with the equipment supplier.
02 — Approve the Communication Interface
LAN, RS485 and CAN are available interface types. Project integrators should confirm the actual protocol, signal mapping, control permissions and alarms required between the battery management system, PCS and supervisory controller. Physical interface availability does not guarantee compatibility with every external PCS or EMS.
03 — Review Transport and Site Readiness
The container measures 6058 × 2600 × 2896mm and weighs approximately 34 tonnes. Before delivery, the project team should verify transport restrictions, unloading access, lifting arrangements, foundation capacity and maintenance clearance. Equipment dimensions should not be treated as confirmation of standard ISO container transport compatibility.
Core Technical Specifications
The following parameters are taken from the BESS-3.44MWH-W product specification. Final interface design should use the approved project technical documents.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Nominal Battery Energy | 3.44MWh |
| Battery Chemistry / Capacity | LiFePO4 / 280Ah |
| Nominal DC Voltage / Range | 1228.8V / 1036–1401V |
| Nominal Charge / Discharge Current | 140A / 140A* |
| Cooling Method | Liquid Cooling |
| Protection / Operating Temperature | IP54 / -20°C to +60°C |
| Communication | LAN / RS485 / CAN |
| Cycle Life / Calendar Life | 8000 Cycles / 15 Years |
| Container Dimensions / Net Weight | 6058 × 2600 × 2896mm / Approx. 34T |
| PCS Configuration | Optional / Project-Selected |
*The supplier specification lists 140A nominal charging and discharging current. Whether this rating applies per battery string, circuit or complete container must be confirmed before PCS sizing.
Recommended EPC Coordination Sequence
For a utility battery storage project, the equipment procurement process is easier to manage when the technical responsibilities are confirmed before delivery.
Step 1 — Interface Approval: Exchange the PCS technical datasheet, battery voltage limits, protection requirements and connection drawings.
Step 2 — Site & Delivery Review: Confirm the proposed container location, transport access, unloading method and civil engineering responsibilities.
Step 3 — Pre-Commissioning Preparation: Agree on communication mapping, operating limits, cooling-system checks and protection-verification procedures.
Step 4 — Acceptance & Handover: Define applicable factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), documentation and responsibilities under the project contract.
EPC Engineering & Procurement FAQs
Q1. Is the specified 140A the total current for the entire 3.44MWh container?
The parameter sheet identifies 140A nominal charging and discharging current but does not clearly define the measurement boundary. EPC engineers should request confirmation of the battery-string configuration and applicable current limits before calculating container-level DC power or selecting a PCS.
Q2. Can the 34-tonne BESS be transported and lifted as a standard shipping container?
Standard container handling should not be assumed. The listed dimensions and approximate weight must be checked against transport equipment, road restrictions, lifting-point documentation and the destination site's unloading capacity. An approved lifting and transportation plan is required for the actual project.
Q3. What information should be included in the BESS-to-PCS interface review?
The review should cover the complete DC operating voltage window, confirmed current limits, approved protection arrangement, communication protocol, control signals, alarms and operating permissions. A project-specific interface matrix helps identify compatibility issues before procurement.
Q4. What acceptance checks should be agreed before equipment delivery?
The EPC contractor and supplier should agree on relevant FAT and SAT requirements, inspection records, communication verification, applicable safety checks, cooling-system inspection and handover documentation. Actual test scope and responsibility should be defined in the approved project contract.
Q5. Which environmental conditions should be reviewed for site approval?
The system specifies IP54 protection, an operating temperature range of -20°C to +60°C, 5–95% operating relative humidity and a working altitude of up to 2000m. Site engineers should also review drainage, exposure, maintenance access and the manufacturer's installation requirements. IP54 alone does not confirm suitability for every outdoor environment.
