1.25MW 10kV Energy Storage PCS Power Conversion System for Power Quality Coordination
1.25MW 10kV Energy Storage PCS for Power Quality Coordination
In a medium-voltage battery energy storage project, electrical engineers must evaluate more than the rated conversion power. Grid connection studies may also require harmonic performance data, reactive power capability, protection coordination and verification of dispatch commands.
The Voltertech BESS-125MW-W is a transformer-isolated, AC-side containerized power conversion system rated at 1250kW on the DC side and 1250kVA on the AC side. Its 10kV interface, adjustable power factor specification and dispatch communication options make it suitable for technical evaluation in MW-scale energy storage projects.

Understanding Harmonic Performance in a 10kV BESS Project
The equipment specification lists maximum total harmonic distortion of no more than 3% at rated power. This is an important reference when preparing the power quality section of a grid connection study.
However, a rated-power harmonic value should not be interpreted as guaranteed harmonic performance under every partial-load condition. It also does not, by itself, demonstrate compliance with the harmonic limits at the project's point of common coupling.
Grid engineers should confirm the harmonic measurement definition, applicable operating conditions and any additional study requirements imposed by the utility or local grid code.
Reactive Power and Power Factor Coordination
The BESS-125MW-W specifies an adjustable power factor range from -1 to +1. This allows the equipment to be evaluated for projects where reactive power behavior forms part of the grid connection requirements.
For practical system design, the complete active-power and reactive-power operating limits must be verified. The stated power factor range does not automatically mean that maximum active output and maximum reactive output can be delivered simultaneously.
Project engineers should request the approved P-Q capability information, control-mode details and applicable operating limitations before committing to a reactive power requirement.
Dispatch Commands, Feedback and Control Verification
The system provides CAN and RS485 for battery-side communication, while dispatch communication includes Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP and IEC 60870-5-104.
For an energy storage plant, identifying an available protocol is only the beginning. The integration team must also verify the relevant command points, measurements, device status indications, permissions and alarm handling.
A clear communication test plan helps determine whether the selected PCS, supervisory controller and battery system can operate together according to the project requirements.

Preparing for Medium-Voltage Grid Acceptance
Before commissioning, the project team should define the applicable connection standards, utility approval procedures and required performance verification.
The AC-side container should be reviewed together with the selected battery system, site protection equipment and plant controller. Important engineering inputs include the approved electrical single-line diagram, grid operating requirements, relevant power quality studies and a coordinated commissioning plan.
The equipment's rated 10kV interface and transformer isolation are technical design characteristics; they do not remove the need for project-specific grid connection approval.
Power Quality & Grid Commissioning FAQs
Q1. Does the ≤3% THD specification apply at every operating power level?
The stated value applies at rated power. Harmonic behavior at other operating conditions and at the project's point of common coupling must be reviewed against the applicable grid code and approved test data.
Q2. Can the PCS deliver full reactive power while also delivering rated active power?
The specification lists a power factor adjustment range of -1 to +1, but the simultaneous active and reactive power limits are not defined by that range alone. Engineers should request the approved P-Q capability curve and control specifications.
Q3. How should dispatch setpoints be verified during commissioning?
The project test plan should verify supported command points, permitted operating modes, feedback values, communication status and alarm responses. Actual tests must follow the approved communication map and system control design.
Q4. Is the equipment's harmonic rating sufficient to demonstrate utility grid-code compliance?
No. Utility acceptance may require studies or measurements at a defined grid connection point, including the effects of other equipment and local operating conditions. The project engineer should confirm the required methods and limits with the relevant utility.
Q5. Which protection studies are important before energizing the 10kV connection?
Typical reviews may include short-circuit calculations, relay coordination, transformer protection, grounding or earthing arrangements and the approved single-line diagram. The exact study scope depends on the project and local interconnection requirements.
